A school outing thanks to used batteries? Discover Bebat’s school programme

Did you know that schools can also become Bebat collection points? And that, as a school, you get rewarded for that? The Bebat savings programme ensures that the collection unit at school becomes the starting point for all kinds of great initiatives to collect batteries. How about a school outing to Villa Pila, the house of batteries? Or all kinds of educational materials? Thanks to these rewards, everyone is eager to collect batteries and learn why it’s so important.

Find out in this article how your collection efforts are rewarded and how to obtain the best results.

Your used batteries will earn you points

Whether you already have a collection unit at school or not, it’s never too late to start collecting. Keep those used batteries coming, because you can earn points for your school!

A school outing to Villa Pila or ...?

One of the possible rewards you can collect with your points, is a bus ride to our house of batteries: Villa Pila. We designed this interactive tour especially for pupils from the 3rd to the 6th grade. In our sorting centre, the children see with their own eyes what happens to the collected batteries, they can ask all the questions they want, and learn all about batteries in a playful manner. Our Villa Pila animator will be happy to explain to the young collectors how everything works.

While every environmentally-conscious class should definitely visit Villa Pila, you can also use the points you have saved for other educational outings, such as to zoos, museums and amusement parks, or for other rewards such as new craft materials and school supplies. You save up for all this by collecting batteries.

How do you save points for your favourite reward?

Do you have a reward in mind? Save up! For every kilo of batteries collected in the Bebat barrel, your school earns one point. Collecting batteries at school: this is how you go about it

Safe collection

Children and parents often enthusiastically collect batteries for the Bebat collection drum at school. To ensure that this is done safely, Bebat provides the necessary dos & don'ts: a series of recommendations and tips to handle used batteries safely.

For example, it is not okay to bring industrial or professional batteries from mum or dad's workplace. Only the small, round batteries used in the home, garden and kitchen, that fit into the opening of the Bebat drum, belong in school.

In Bebat’s educational download centre (available in Dutch and French), you will find a clear poster on the subject. As a teacher, you can also download the necessary teaching material on batteries.

Would you like to devote a whole lesson to batteries? Then our ready-made teaching kits can certainly help you! We developed one for each grade of primary education and one for secondary education (available in Dutch and French).

Tips for collecting lots of points

  1. Organise a battery hunt
Encourage pupils, parents, teachers and staff to go on a battery hunt at home. A useful tool for this is the Battery hunt checklist. Have everyone bring their batteries to school in the handy Bebat cube and drop them in the collection unit.

  2. Devote a lesson to batteries
An interesting lesson about batteries shows children the importance of collecting batteries. Once they understand the reasons, they will want to collect them! Download the teaching kits here (available in Dutch and French).

  3. Involve batteries in the lesson
In the maths lesson, explore with the children how many batteries make up one kilo. Use this blog article (link in Dutch) to calculate how many raw materials for glasses frames, watering cans, tricycles, etc. your class has already gathered.

The school outings and other rewards are great fun, of course, but they are not the children's only motivation. They are also driven by the idea that they themselves are helping to make the world a better place. Aren't our Bebat Heroes wonderful?
