Join Bebat

Together with you, Bebat wants to give all discarded batteries a new life. Therefore, we relieve our participants in terms of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for batteries. What exactly does this entail and what do we expect from our participants? You can read about this below.

Your obligations as a producer or importer

If your company makes (products containing) batteries available on the Belgian market, you must comply with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This stems from the European Battery Regulation 2023/1542, supplemented by federal and regional legislation in Belgium.

The main obligations within the EPR are:

1

Register

with the three regional governments.

2

Submit declarations

of the batteries you make available for the first time on the market.

3

Guarantee scheme

for batteries for which you do not pay an environmental contribution.

4

Build awareness

and prevention.

5

Organise collection

to meet the legal targets, through a network covering the entire Belgian territory with ADR-compliant transport.

6

Recycle, reuse or repurpose

discarded batteries.

7

Demonstrate recycling efficiency.

8

Report

to authorities.

How can Bebat help your company?

There is a lot involved in the Extended Producer Responsibility. That is why Bebat wants to support and unburden its participants in this. We do this through both a collective system (environmental contribution) and an individual customised system (administrative contribution).

Regional registration requirement

Bebat ensures the registration of its participants in the producer register with the three regional governments. That’s how they know you are complying with the EPR.

Online platform for declarations

Bebat participants have access to the MyBebat portal. Here, you can easily submit your declaration and access and track all your documents.

Awareness-building campaigns and prevention measures

Bebat fulfils its participants’ awareness-building obligation by launching various campaigns, including on the TV and radio, and by organising all kinds of actions. In this way, we want to make consumers and companies aware of the importance of bringing in discarded batteries and processing them correctly.

Collection*

Thanks to an extensive network of more than 23,000 Bebat collection points, we ensure that discarded batteries are collected again.

Free collection tools provided*

Bebat provides the necessary safe means, customised to the collection point, to take back and collect batteries free of charge.

Safe transport, storage, and processing*

Bebat ensures the safe transport, storage, and processing of collected batteries, in accordance with the legislation and ADR guidelines.

Recycle, reuse, or repurpose*

Bebat looks at the options for possible reuse or repurposing. For recycling, we only work with recyclers who meet all legal standards and can demonstrate the required recycling efficiency.

Reporting to the regional governments

Every year, Bebat submits detailed reports with the data listed in the legislation to the authorities.

Guarantee scheme*

As a Bebat participant, you comply with the legal guarantee scheme. After all, you pay an upfront contribution that covers the full EPR obligations.

Advocacy and defence

Bebat defends its participants’ interests from the regional, federal, and European authorities.

In-house experience and expertise

Bebat has been giving discarded batteries a new life for 30 years by collecting, sorting, and recycling them. We are an environmental organisation with world-class collection results and we strive to recycle more and better.

European network

For the growing volume of large lithium-ion batteries, Bebat is part of Reneos, the European network that has a wide range of services that unburden you when it comes to discarded lithium-ion batteries.

More about Reneos

*Only applicable for all batteries subject to the environmental contribution, not for batteries subject to the administrative contribution. In the latter case, Bebat can support you by concluding an individual agreement. This offers you a tailor-made solution for all your discarded batteries. The financial guarantee, covering the cost of full UPR obligations, should be provided directly to the government.

What does your company still need to do?

Bebat is doing a lot to help you start complying with the legal Extended Producer Responsibility. As an affiliated participant, you are left with a little bit of responsibility.

  1. Declare the batteries you make available on the Belgian market
You must declare the batteries you make available on the Belgian market via our online platform MyBebat. This happens annually if you make fewer than 10,000 batteries available on the market, or monthly if you make more than 10,000 batteries available.
    Read more about declarations

  2. Pay the necessary environmental and/or administrative contributions
As a Bebat participant, you pay an environmental contribution or an administrative contribution per declared battery (or kg), depending on the batteries you make available on the market.
    Read more about contributions

  3. Indicate environmental contributions on your sales invoices sent to professional customers
As a Bebat participant, you are legally obligated to state the environmental contribution on your sales invoices and credit notes sent to Belgian professional customers.

  4. Meet obligations for batteries with an administrative contribution
Do you make batteries available on the Belgian market for which you have to pay an administrative contribution? If so, there are a number of obligations you need to satisfy yourself. Bebat can help you with this by drawing up an individual agreement.

How much does it cost to be a Bebat participant?

As a Bebat participant, you pay an annual flat-rate contribution of €60. You also pay an environmental contribution or an administrative contribution per battery (or per kg) made available on the market, depending on the type of battery.

Environmental contribution

You pay an environmental contribution for:

  • Batteries ≤ 20 kg
  • Lead-acid batteries ≤ 3 kg
  • ESS modules for an installation ≤ 16 MWh

Administrative contribution

You pay an administrative contribution for:

  • Batteries > 20 kg
  • Lead-acid batteries > 3 kg
