Everything you need to know

about batteries

Batteries play an essential role in our daily lives. They store and provide power for our computers, smartphones, clocks, cars, flashlights and so much more.

They bring us music, information, light, the ability to move and communicate wherever we are. Even in space! Some people rely on them to keep their very hearts beating, yet most of us don’t know all that much about batteries - how they work, how they vary from one another, and the impact they have on our world, historically, today and in the future.

Discover everything about how batteries are made, how they work and the role they will play in future technology, from fun facts to clear insights.

Battery

/ˈbat(ə)ri/

A battery is a device that uses electrochemical reactions to produce and supply electricity. They all essentially consist of four parts:

  1. the anode - negative terminal, with a high concentration of electrons
  2. the cathode - positive terminal, with a low concentration of electrons
  3. the electrolyte - a chemical medium that facilitates the flow of electricity from the cathode to the anode
  4. the separator - a physical barrier separating the anode and cathode to avoid internal short circuits
