Safely collecting batteries
Tips and guidelines for collection points
Collection units
Make sure the Bebat collection units are picked up in time
Do you have a container without a telemetry system? Simply request a collection via the MyBebat portal when your container is almost full, to avoid it from becoming overfilled.
Do you have a smart collection unit with a telemetry system? Then you don't need to request a collection yourself. As soon as your unit is almost full, a collection will automatically be scheduled for you.
Check the insertion opening of your collection unit
Sometimes it might seem like a collection unit is full when it's not. The insertion opening might be blocked, for instance, by bags, boxes, or an oversized battery. Therefore, regularly check the insertion opening and clear it if necessary.
Only use Bebat collection units
Our units are designed to safely store batteries according to the latest safety insights. Is your drum not in a Bebat display? Then close it after each use with the lid and the tension ring.
Place your collection unit far from flammable materials
Position the collection unit in a location with ample ventilation and at a sufficient distance from flammable materials such as stacks of old paper, bottles of oil, spray cans, and so on.

Ensure social monitoring
Your Bebat receptacle should be placed in a busy, highly visible area to ensure ample social monitoring.
Do not mix used batteries with other waste
Avoid mixing batteries with other waste. Therefore, place a trash can near your collection unit: this prevents items other than batteries from being thrown in.

Avoid extreme heat and a humid environment
Place your collection unit in a dry and sheltered spot, indoors or covered. This not only ensures it lasts longer, but it is also important for the telemetry (if applicable) to function correctly
Treat your collection unit in good faith
Keep the collection unit in good and clean condition. Clean the material in the same way you would take care of your own shop or business equipment.

Handling collected batteries
Avoid contact with skin and eyes
Be extra careful with rusty, leaking or burnt batteries. Always avoid contact with your skin and eyes. If you do come into contact with battery like this, wash your hands thoroughly and rinse your skin or eyes abundantly with water – even if you don't feel any burning. If burns occur, contact your doctor.
Tape off button cells and 9V batteries
Can you look inside of your collection unit or do you fill it yourself? Then cover button cells and the poles of 9V batteries with tape. This creates a protective layer that prevents them from short-circuiting with other batteries.
Preferably use transparent tape: this way, the batteries remain identifiable during the sorting process. You can also use the packaging of new button cells to wrap the old ones. To cover larger amounts of used button cells, you can use A4 sheets with self-adhesive film.

Spread button cells in the collection unit
Do you have a view of the contents of your collection unit or do you fill it yourself? In addition to taping off your button cells, it is also best to spread the button cells in the unit. This makes storage safer! By doing so, you prevent the positive and negative poles from touching each other and causing a short circuit.
Only appropriate batteries in the collection unit
Make sure you only collect batteries that are suitable for the type of collection point you represent (school, company, store, etc.). The type of batteries you may collect depends on your activity and the associated collection materials.
Prepare for a collection
Pay extra attention to damaged batteries
Package damaged or broken batteries, which could pose a risk of short circuiting, in a way that prevents any issues. If in doubt, you can contact us at collection@bebat.be or call us at 0800 97 521.

Easy access for the driver
Place your collection unit(s) in an easily accessible location so that our driver can reach them smoothly. Preferably, place the unit close to the entrance and not on a floor other than ground level if there is no elevator.

Place multiple collection units together
Do you have multiple collection units? If possible, place them all in the same location when they are being picked up. This way, our driver can easily find them all in one place.
