E-mopeds: everything you need to know about the battery

Mopeds and scooters, you usually hear them coming from afar. That no longer applies to the latest generation of these two-wheelers. The e-scooter, the electrically powered variant, is on the rise. In this blog post, we will tell you how to get the most out of the battery of your electric mopeds and how to extend the life of your battery.

The battery of an e-moped

The battery of an electric scooter is - due to its many interesting properties - a lithium-ion battery. This type of battery is lightweight yet can store a lot of energy and is easy to recharge. These batteries are very efficient and have a long lifespan ahead of them. The latter is only true for batteries that are treated with care, of course.

Just like the electric car, an e-scooter needs to be plugged in to charge. But one major advantage is that this can be done via a standard household outlet. You don’t need to provide a special charging station at your home, or find one near your work.

Depending on the model and brand, the theoretical driving range averages from 40 to 80 kilometers after a full charge cycle. This range might be lower if, for example, driving uphill or carrying a passenger,…

Did you know that when you purchase an electric moped you are entitled to a zero-emission premium? The premium for a class B electric moped is up to 750 euros. You can find all the information and conditions on this page.

How do you extend the battery life of your electric moped?

  • Don't wait until your battery is dead to recharge your e-moped. Arriving at work? Charge the battery. Home from a day at work? Plug your electric moped into the outlet.
  • If your moped will be side-lined for a while in the garage, make sure that your battery is well charged.
  • Are you a sun worshiper or do you thrive in freezing temperatures? An electric moped certainly does not. Extreme temperatures, in either direction, are a no-go. A sheltered spot or a spare corner in the garage is a must.
  • Have your e-moped checked annually by a professional. Keep the tire pressure up, check the motor, etc. This keeps it in top shape and is good for the lifespan of your battery.
  • Respect the maximum weight you are allowed to carry. That extra load drains the battery of your moped.
  • Always use the charger and adapter that comes with the battery.
  • Always disconnect the battery from the charger and the power network after charging.
  • Let the battery cool down sufficiently before recharging it. The same tip applies in reverse: do not use the battery immediately after charging.
  • Water and electricity do not mix well. Therefore, never clean your e-moped with a high-pressure cleaner.

The battery of my e-moped seems to need replacing, what now?

If the capacity of your e-moped suddenly fails, then there is a good chance that something is going on inside your battery. Over time, there's a risk of chemical crystallization in the battery, which hampers the charging process. Eventually, the battery will completely refuse to work.

If you catch it early, replacing a few cells can already provide a solution. This way, there's no need to install a brand new battery. However, if the battery completely gives up, then a complete replacement is the only option. Note, this must always be done by a professional. They have the expertise and perform this in the safest conditions.

And what happens to the discarded batteries?

Since replacing the battery of an e-moped is the work of professionals, the responsibility does not lie with you as a consumer. The scooter dealer or repairer will ensure that Bebat picks up the batteries.

Are you making e-mopeds available on the market?

As a producer or importer of products with batteries (such as e-moped) in Belgium, you must comply with a number of legal obligations. If you register your company with Bebat, we will ensure that you comply with all these obligations.
