Everything you need to know about batteries

As a consumer, you are entitled to clear information about the batteries you purchase and use. This is also stipulated in Article 74 of the European Battery Regulation 2023/1542.

On this page, we are pleased to bring together how Bebat which fulfils the extended responsibility of producers (EPR), ensures that you as a consumer are well and correctly informed — through campaigns, tips, and clear communication, among others.

Tips for a correct usage

Batteries are everywhere, but how do you handle them correctly? With these tips, you will learn how to use your batteries properly.

Campaigns

Our campaigns demonstrate how important it is to recycle used batteries and encourage everyone to bring in their used batteries.

Safety tips

What is the best way to store (used) batteries safely? And what should you do with leaking or damaged batteries? You can read about it here.

Environmental contributions

In addition to a flat-rate contribution, Bebat participants also pay an environmental contribution for certain types of batteries, covering the costs related to fulfilling the EPR obligations.

Raising awareness

Through prevention and awareness campaigns, we make everyone conscious of how to safely and correctly use, store, and collect batteries.

Symbols and labelling on batteries

You will find various symbols and information on (the packaging of) batteries. But what exactly do these symbols mean? We help you understand them correctly.

Batteries are HHW

Batteries are considered hazardous household waste (HHW). They must always be stored, collected, and recycled separately. They certainly do not belong in the general waste bin, in the fire, or in nature.

To raise public awareness of this, Bebat regularly organises prevention campaigns on correct waste stream sorting, often in collaboration with other management organisations such as Recupel and Fost Plus.
