Looking to buy an Energy Storage System? Here’s how to be sure everything’s sorted properly

Energy Storage Systems, also known as ESS (including plug-and-play systems and home batteries), are growing ever more popular. And it makes sense: you can use more of your own solar energy, lower your energy bill, and are better protected against peak consumption. However, purchasing an ESS isn’t something you do every day. It’s a considerable investment, so you want to be absolutely sure you’re making the right choice. Did you know, for example, that there are also obligations regarding the take-back and recycling at the end of your ESS’s life?

What happens to an ESS at the end of its life?

Just like with used batteries, certain rules and laws apply to Energy Storage Systems concerning take-back and recycling. These are grouped under the term extended producer responsibility (EPR), which is legally required across Europe .

It’s up to the producer or importer of the ESS to meet these EPR obligations. To help with this, they can affiliate with Bebat. They then pay an environmental contribution which covers Bebat’s costs to ensure that ESS units are collected and recycled properly at the end of their life.

What does this mean for you?

As a consumer, you want to be certain that an environmental contribution has indeed been paid for your ESS. Only then can you be sure you won’t face worries or unexpected costs when it comes time to replace or recycle your battery.

Until recently, it was difficult to check this yourself. That’s why we developed a tool to change that.

Easily check if your ESS is in order

On our website, you can quickly check whether your ESS (including plug-and-play and home batteries) has been properly declared and whether an environmental contribution was paid. All you need is the serial number. You can usually find this on:

  • a sticker or plate on the modules of the ESS or on the ESS itself (S/N or Serial Number)
  • the app or web portal of the battery brand
  • the installation report or invoice from your installer

Got the serial number at hand? You can enter it straight away on this page.

Why is this check so valuable for you?

  • Certainty: Avoid nasty surprises and know that your ESS comes from a producer fulfilling their legal obligations.
  • Peace of mind: You’ll never have to wonder who pays for collection and recycling if your ESS can no longer be repaired or needs replacing at end of life.
  • Protection: Not every seller plays by the rules. By checking the serial number yourself, you ensure you don’t end up responsible for something the producer should have done.

A few more tips for buying an ESS with confidence

An ESS can certainly be a worthwhile purchase. If you want complete peace of mind that you’re making a smart choice, always ask about extended producer responsibility.

Ask your installer or supplier: “Has my ESS been declared with Bebat and has the environmental contribution been paid?”. A trustworthy party can confirm this straight away.

Also use the tool on our website for confirmation that everything is in order. Still have doubts? Don’t hesitate to bring it up with your supplier.
