How to avoid leaking batteries

You know what it's like: those white grains or a liquid substance that suddenly comes out of your battery. We're happy to tell you how you can prevent your batteries from leaking!

Remove batteries from the device

Most batteries rarely or never leak. However, when they do, they start leaking when they have been left unused in a device for too long. When batteries are inside a device, the two different types of metal (one type with a positive charge and another type with a negative charge) remain connected. If the device does not consume power, the conductive substance between the metals (the electrolyte) may start to leak. Then white crystals or a liquid substance appear on the outside of the battery.

Give batteries their own box

Batteries that are not in a device can 'rest'. The metals do not come into contact with each other, and the battery will not leak. Be smart about it: set up two boxes in a fixed place and provide them with a clear label. One box for empty batteries, another box for batteries that you can still use.

Organize a battery hunt

Did you know that an average Belgian family has 128 batteries in their house, and that 29 of them are used? Time for a challenge! Who can find the most batteries or can search and check off the most locations? Download our free checklist (in Dutch or in French) and organize a battery hunt about four times a year. The start of a new season is a great time to do that!

Take used batteries to a collection point

Did you guys find 29 used batteries? Or did your family have more? Or perhaps fewer? In any case: don’t leave the used batteries lying in their box. They dream of a second career as eyeglass frames, bicycle frames, or even airplanes. Because indeed, those are just a few of the items that can be made from used batteries.
